Discover the spirit of the Bulgarian Revival in the heart of Lovech – Varosha Architectural and Historical Reserve

Welcome to the ancient quarter of Varosha – a true journey back in time! Stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets, feel the spirit of the past and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Bulgarian Renaissance. Here, every house, every stone, even the air carries the aroma of Bulgaria, tradition and the creativity of our ancestors.

The story behind the reserve

Varosha is not just an old quarter – it is a living museum under the open sky. It was established as an architectural and historical reserve back in 1968 with the aim of preserving the unique appearance of the Bulgarian Revival houses, churches and cultural monuments. Today it encompasses over 200 historical and architectural landmarks, and in 2011 it was officially recognized as an archaeological reserve.

A Walk Through Revival Bulgaria

While walking through Varosha, you will notice the characteristic two-story houses with high stone fences, massive oak gates and spacious verandas. Most of them were built in the 1870s and bear the authentic style of the Revival masters. The yards are usually planted with ivy and geraniums, and the alleys often lead to cozy, secluded spaces where time seems to have stopped.
