Here, just steps from the Vasil Levski Museum, is one of the city’s most valuable spiritual and historical treasures – the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This is not just a church, but a place steeped in centuries-old history, faith and revolutionary spirit.

The first information about the church dates back to 1784, but there are reasons to believe that it existed even earlier. During the turbulent years of the Greek Conspiracy (1821-1828), the church was burned down, but in 1834 it was rebuilt with new strength and new life. You will notice that the building is slightly sunk into the ground – three steps down, which was a common practice for Christian churches in the Ottoman period. Architecturally, it is a typical Bulgarian Renaissance pseudo-basilica, with the dome, bell tower and narthex added in later years.

But its greatest pride is the incredible iconostasis – a true work of art, sculpted by the masters of the Tryavna School. Richly carved, with exceptional details, it ranks among the best examples of church woodcarving from the 19th century. The icons in the temple also carry their own history, as they were painted in the 18th – 19th centuries. In addition to them, valuable old printed books are also kept here, the oldest of which dates back to 1624.

The courtyard of the temple also has its historical value. Prominent hunters and associates of Vasil Levski such as Marin Poplukanov, Velichka Hashnova and Ivan Doktorov – people who gave their lives to the revolutionary movement – are buried here.

The history of the “Assumption of the Virgin” is inextricably linked with the national liberation struggle. In the home of priest Lukan Lilov, a church employee, the foundations of the Lovech Revolutionary Committee were laid, founded by Hierodeacon Ignatius himself - Vasil Levski. The Great Apostle of Freedom often came here, served in the church and found refuge among his comrades. For many years, priest Krastyu Nikiforov, who was the treasurer of the committee and whose role in history has long been unjustly violated, also served alongside him.

Since 2003, a permanent exhibition dedicated to Vasil Levski and priest Krastyu can be seen in the narthex of the church, which categorically refutes the myths of betrayal. If you are interested in authentic history, this is the place that will give you a new look at these events.

Today, the church "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" continues to be active - a place for prayer, humility and spiritual experience. Step inside, feel the spirit of the past and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a holy place that has witnessed some of the most significant moments in Bulgarian history.
