If you are in Lovech and strolling through the beautiful Stratesh Park, you cannot help but notice the imposing White Monument. This is not just a monument – it is a story told in stone. Erected in 1902, this monument honors the heroes of the Battle of Lovech in August 1877, when the city was liberated during the Russo-Turkish War.
The monument is located at the site from which Russian artillery fired on the main Turkish redoubt in the area of Cherven Bryag. It was here that Russian troops under the command of Lieutenant General Prince Alexander Imeretinsky fought decisive battles to cut off the supply lines of the Ottoman army.
The project was designed by architect Vokar, and the structure itself is an 11-meter truncated pyramid of carved stones, ending with a Christian cross. At its base, the monument has two memorial slabs of white Italian marble. One slab immortalizes the date of liberation - August 22, 1877, with an inscription that reminds of this important event. Above it is the Russian imperial coat of arms. The other slab bears the names of the Russian military units that took part in the battle.
- At the opening of the monument, a fence of captured rifles was erected, and two cannons are located nearby.
- From the platform in front of the monument, a magnificent view of Lovech opens - do not forget to take pictures!
- During the war, Lovech was liberated twice - the first time on July 5, 1877, and the second - on August 22, 1877, when the city was finally annexed to the free Bulgarian territories.
The city was a key strategic point that Russian troops had to capture in order to cut off the supply of the Ottoman army in Pleven. The fighting continued for several days, ending with a victory for the Russian and Bulgarian volunteers. After the liberation, local Bulgarian government was established in Lovech, and the Ottoman forces were expelled.
Today, the White Monument remains a symbol of sacrifice and the fight for freedom. Visit it and feel the spirit of history while enjoying the beautiful nature of Stratesh Park!
